Abstract: This study is devoted to an analysis of the methane emission bythe use of coal and natural gas in the messt important productionand consumption countries. To this end, the process chains from the winning to the energetic use are regarded, technical reduction measures are presented and their potentials are calculated for each country separately. The signification of the methane emission for the comparison of hard coal, brown coal, and natural gas according to their influence an the greenhause effect is demonstrated exemplary for the power production. The chain comparison contains besides the CO$_{2}$ emission by burning and the CH$_{4}$ emission additional the CO$_{2}$ emission in the presituated chain. Furthermore the development of the CO$_{2}$ equivalent trace gas emission by thepower industries in the selected countries is regarded by scenario calculations until the year 2010.
